CNF Coke Essay
It is amazing how easy it is to find a Cola recipe that is actually pretty good, so good that 60% of people that tried it in a blind taste test liked it more than coke. What was equally as interesting was how 28 of the 30 people where able to tell what cup was the coke cup in a blind taste test. This American Life has really helped enhance for me what Gladwell was saying about Coke and Pepsi and how it is really not all about the taste in the food and drink market.
According to Gladwell and Coke even if a new company came out with a new brand of Cola Coke would be fine because they are not just selling the taste of the cola they are selling the whole package. They are selling the can they are using a whole advertising empire and most importantly they are selling peoples memories, like the lady said in the blind taste test when tasting coke “ This tastes like my childhood and that for we is the most powerful advertising you can possibly have, because no matter what wizard you have in your advertising department you can not make up for 120 years of history and memories with not only America but the world.
This must mean a lot for a company because most people when they go to a store they look for something that they know or recognize. Its just like if you are going to a party you look for someone you know almost subconsciously as you walk through the door. With Coke it is even more powerful because so many people have a personal connection with Coke, like it was what your mom always drank or it was what your grandparents kept in the fridge that is why we don’t just buy coke because we like the taste we buy Coke because it has a special place in our hearts.
