Freshmen: Today we focused on more examples of compare and contrast; your homework tonight is to write a post on the blog in response to the following prompt: Using compare and contrast well, write about a topic in an interesting way. You can use the piece we started in class today if you wish, revising as you go.

You also have 20 minutes of reading, and honors students should remember Tuesday's meeting and Thursday's deadline for the letter to the editor; also due Friday is vocabulary Chapter 5.

Sophomores: Today our focus was on making predictions as readers. As you wrap up the first half of The Alchemist, try to predict what will happen next, based on what you know about the plot, characters, and theme of the story and touch on those in the reflection that is due for Thursday's seminar; also due Friday is vocabulary Chapter 5.

CNF: Today we looked at a film that is a great example of information asymmetry and will continue it this week.

A PC is better than a gaming console in almost every way. First of all, PCs can be customized, as long as you are willing to pay more, while gaming consoles are all made the same. Gaming consoles can't be upgraded once they have been made. However, with PCs, you can change every piece of hardware in it or the software on it. Everyone has a PC, while only some people have gaming consoles. This means more things are developed for PC rather than gaming consoles. PCs are easier to browse the internet on too. I've tried using the internet on a console and it is a pain. The one advantage that gaming consoles have is that every console is the exact same, so each person doesn't have different results when they play a video game. On PC, your processor or graphics card may not be as good as another person's, so you get a different experience than them. However, PCs are still better than gaming consoles because they are customizable, more things are developed for PCs, and you can more easily browse the internet on a PC.

What is the point of assigning specific books for summer reading? Honestly, would it be too hard to let them chose their own summer reading? I understand the importance of everyone reading classic novels and branching out to read more diverse stories, but summer is supposed to equal freedom. Forcing a book down someone's throat does not. In my opinion, schools should let kids chose their summer reading, as long as it fulfills the criteria. It solves so many problems. Kids would be more interested in the material, and classic novels could be read in class where more discussions could be held. That means entertainment for students, and well-read pupil for teachers.

Everyone can spend hours on the internet, looking at pictures and videos of things they love, but the true difference is what they are looking at. The way I see it, in most social media sites, there are two sides: those who like popular bands, clothes, movies, and television shows, and those who like, well, nerdy things. we call those who like the popular fashion, movie, music, and television trends "Hipsters". Even though the point of being a "Hipster" is not to be mainstream, most of them fail miserably at that. They keep up to date on the latest, and the hottest of any trends. That's just what they hold important to them. But the other side, the dorks we call "Fandoms", they keep up with whatever "Fandom" they choose to participate it. "Fandoms" are really just fanclubs with a different name. Anything from books to music to television to movies to actors can have a "Fandom" based around it. While visiting this side of social media, you will see typed screeches instead of meaningful song lyrics. You will see talk of actors who have appeared in shows deemed "Geeky" instead of on-goings about more popular actors. These two groups are quite different from each other and can sometimes be seen fighting in text on a computer, but they still hold much in common. Both groups sit for hours posting and commenting about what they love and why they love it. Both take time to look through thousands of pictures, videos, and clips of their favorite things. They aren't dissimilar, whatever they like to believe.

Gasoline cars have been apart of human society for over a century now. Starting with the model T designed by Henry Ford. Cars were one of the greatest invention man has ever seen, but with oil funds decreasing, and the price of refining the oil becoming increasingly expensive, gas cars are becoming more expensive and uneconomical to run. In the last decade, a handful of electric cars have begun hitting the streets, in an act to reduce the amount of pollution, and to cut down on oil and gasoline use. Cars like the Prius; one of the first electric cars introduced, was a huge hit in the United States and around the world. The Prius in a combination of gas and electricity; famously known for its incredibly quite engine, and extraordinary MPG (Miles Per Gallon). One of the newest released electric cars, is the Tesla Model S, which is a fully electric sports car, with the hefty price tag of $85,000 dollars, but it is fully electric, and has a huge range of 400 miles per charge, greater distance than most gas cars.
Even though electric cars sound great, and have greatly influenced me on electric cars, there are great benefits to having gas cars in the world. Tesla has had a great introduction into the world of cars with its new models just released this year, but they have had a growing sketchy record when it comes to safety. In the last two years, Tesla has had three model S cars (As I previously stated) blow up at certain speeds, causing extremely damage to the car, but luckily no reported injures to the passengers. Also, the electric technology hasn't been completely proven to be as naturally and environmentally helpful as some have made it seem. To make electricity many companies use natural ways like hydropower or wind turbines, but there are also ways that make the pollution even worse like burning coal.
Both cars have great pros and also sketchy cons. Some say that we need more environmentally helpful cars like the Prius or the all new Tesla, but others say that gas cars outweigh the harms of electric cars, and we should use the more traditional method.

Talking on the phone is a lot more easier than texting is. Most of us now a days text and hardly call a person and have a conversatioin with voice. The problem with that is in texting, things can be misunderstood. You could think someone posed a question instead of a statement if they lack punctuation. You may get the wrong tone of voice while reading a text. As where in a phone call, you hear not just the words but tone. It solves so many problems. There is less confusion and more clarity.

Sleeping is better than being awake. When you sleep, you can do anything that your heart desires. You can create anything with just one thought about it. When you are awake, you have to deal with real world things like people (who if you're like me, you're not at ease when they are around). Sleeping allows us to fight bad guys, go on crazy adventures that the awake you would never dare to do. When you're awake, you get hungry, fall and get hurt. Sleeping is pain-free and you become indestructible. If you know how to dream lucidly, you can live an amazing life and say what you feel without feeling like anyone will judge you. If you make a mistake in your dream, you can delete it and redo the story. Mistakes in real life can haunt you forever. Dreaming, you can die a million plus times, Oh nightmare, I just died. No problem *poof* and you're alive again. In actuality, when you're dead, you're dead. Good luck recovering from that one.

Video games are just as effective at teaching reading as books are. When playing most games, there is reading involved at one point. Most games have quests or objectives that you need to read in order to progress in the game. This can teach the player new vocabulary words. Books are easily ripped and/or spilled upon. This makes them unreadable and unfixable, therefore meaning you need to buy a new book. Games however are not easily ripped and broken, even if scratched most disks can be repaired at a low cost. Games are also more fun than reading a book. Although, books are better for your eyes because it is an actual physical copy of the reading, while games are pixels on a screen. As I stated before, though, games are ultimately more fun.

Man to man defense is much better than zone defense in basketball because with man defense it allows the players to match up size and strength, and it also allows the players to double team and lock down their man. with zone defense the key is not mostly but sometimes left unguarded, and with zone defense you don't have as much pressure on the ball as you do with man. Man defense you always have someone guarding someone but most of the time man is always one of the best forms of defense. Sure it has its disadvantages at one point like where if you match up wrong you can be out runned and out strength but always you will have a good defense. but if the guy is bigger or faster than you then you can switch with a person and say "hey guard him on defense" because then you will have an unstoppable defense in basketball.

Football is literally the perfect sport. Hockey is the most pointless, unorganized sport that people actually watch. Both sports have a significant amount of physical contact that take place, but yet how can football be so enjoyable to watch, while watching hockey is like torture? Hockey is a like combination of soccer, basketball, and football, and the outcome is horrendous. I can't fathom how a person can find watching a man hitting a small, plastic puck with a stick enjoyable. Also, who would want to sit through that nonstop? Football involves a bit of action, in which the ball is in play from about five to fifteen seconds, and then a short break. No one sane can watch men hitting pucks with sticks for hours without end. This also shows that hockey is very unorganized, because from my perspective, it just looks like a bunch of guys getting together and hitting pucks with sticks while trying to shove each other... on ice.

Riding bikes and driving cars are two popular modes of transportation these days. There are several differences that make people usually choose one over the other as a preferred way to travel. Cars are effortless, quick, and comfortable machines. They provide protection from the weather and temperature, whereas bikes cannot. Cars also don't require endurance or strength, and are a popular choice after a hard day of work. Cars can transport more than one person at once, making them convenient for families and groups. However, cars and gasoline are expensive investments, and insurance bumps up the price as well. Bicycles, on the other hand, are clean and active form of movement. Riders can enjoy the open air and get exercise at the same time. Riders can stay fit as they pedal uphill and across longer distances. Also, riders don't have to pay for gas, which can be a major financial cripple. This clean form of movement also puts no pollution in the air. However, bikes cannot carry as much as cars and an effective bike can only support one rider. These differences are some that need consideration and review when debating how to move yourself, your friends, and your family around.

Many people today watch movies like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games without reading the books. Provided, movies give a better visualization of the scenery and the characters, but books offer so much more.
Movies never include everything that was in the book, and this can be a deal breaker to some people. Movies sometimes even add in elements that weren't in the book. Books allow you to use your imagination, while a movie just gives you a scene and basically tells you to deal with it. Books also give you what a character is thinking. In a movie, you really can't do that without making a random, disembodied voice.
People will probably forever argue on books vs. movies, but It's obvious that books are better.

Some people might say that it is a good thing to grow up. i mean well eventually have to at one point, but if you had the choice would you choose to stay forever young? as we grow up all we want to is to be able to drive or go off to collage or high school. then as we come to get these things we all wanted as young kids we just want to go back. Back to the simpleness of it all, the no homework and watching all the disney movies we want.

Reading the book will always be better than watching the movie. When you read a book you allow your imagination to flow free. You can help fell in details such as If you want the carpet to be green or brown or what ever color you so choose you can make it that, whereas in a movie you have to see what ever the director chooses. Books will always have better special effects because your imagination is not constrained by money, physics or how advanced technology is at the time. Whit movies you have to fit hundred and hundreds pages of book in to a short two to three hours, you can you do this without taking our important information. These and many other reasons are why I think books are better than their movie counterparts.

There are basically two places I have ever skied in my life. I usually prefer Deer Valley, but have gone to Snowbasin time and time again as well. Many people say that the community of Deer Valley is full of stuck-up, rich brats, but when I ski there, I don't see them that way. The environment at Deer Valley is much kinder than most other places in my opinion. It mostly consists of people visiting from out of state. I agree with the fact that some wealthy people ski there, but they ski everywhere. The community at Deer valley is welcoming which is probably why they attract people. However, the community at places such as Snowbasin are also very kind and welcoming. In my experiences though, I have not found it easy to know where things are and who is ultimately willing to help you. The slopes at all ski resorts are great to ski on. They all have one thing in common- the greatest snow on earth.

Long ago there was only one type of belly dancing, and compared to todays likes and views, it has been altered and changed. New types have been introduced, and combinations have been made like drum solos, and oriental styles. My opinion on the new styles is that there all just watered-down belly dancing, few people really even know how it was created. Styles have there own originality and claim to be different, but really they all include the same drum beats and motion in the hips.

Many people prefer Nike over Adidas, but there is that occasional German freak who looks down upon a Nike wearer. Face it, Nike is just a bigger brand name, and people buy it because everybody else has some.
"Jock Socks" have become a staple in a teenagers wardrobe and you can see them sported around middle and high schools. The black base with the white check are seen in almost every sport event, boys and girls wearing them.
Adidas is also worn, but by mostly older men who aren't the trend center for fashion nowadays. They both have a wide variety of accessories to offer, but Nike socks and sweat gear are more in demand. Wearing the Nike not only states that you are "cool" but it shows that you care about your appearance.

Gay athletes should be allowed to play in the NBA. The NBA has been perceived as straight-male dominated sport. Nowadays, gay players in the league have been more open with their sexuality. The NBA directors and its players have to be accepting of these gay athletes.

Since the beginning of the NBA’s history, players in the league were straight. Well, at least most players didn't say they were gay. Because of this, the NBA seemed liked a place unwelcoming and unfamiliar to gay players. I think for players back then it felt more comfortable to leave the subject of sexuality out of the picture and make it seem like they all had the same sexuality; they didn't want to feel uncomfortable and like an outcast.

The NBA has changed in today’s world. More people are open about their sexuality. For example, Jason Collins of the Washington Wizards spoke out openly about his sexuality in early April of this year. This was a shock to most Americans because they've come to know most NBA players as straight. Jason received a lot of support from some of his NBA colleagues such as Kobe Bryant. This helped Jason feel more comfortable with his decision and continuing to play in the NBA. On the other hand, people outside the NBA such as players in the NFL.

Despite their history and critics outside of them, the NBA should be excepting to Gay players. Even though the old NBA didn’t have a lot of openly gay players, the NBA should be open to change because the basketball played in the league itself is not changing. The only change happening now is that players are more open with their sexuality, and players are broadening the perceptions of people outside the NBA; They are showing that they are gay athletes in the NBA who should be accepted.

Winter is better than summer. In winter they have winter sports such as snowboarding. In Park City kids take the city bus to the mountain when they have free time or are bored and get fresh air for a while. Pumpkin Spice lattes and Gingerbread Chai Tea comes back to Starbucks. Everything is covered in a blanket of snow. Sweatshirts and sweaters are wearable. Everyone is exited for Christmas, even though Thanksgiving hasn’t happened yet. In summer every insect is out to get you. Sports are usually limited in the summer. Kids get exercise by staying around town for a few hours, which includes buying food and riding the bus. Starbucks has cool lime refreshers which taste like sour water. Your dead grass that you forgot to tend to is visible to the world. The biggest thing to get exited for is 4th of July, which is really the only date people keep track of in the summer. Summer is great for maybe the first week, but once we are deep into summer, I realize how much I miss winter. Instead of the endless summer, let’s have an endless winter.

There is a huge difference between recreational and competition soccer. I started out in a little rec team and just a couple of months ago joined a hard working high school team. Wow, what a change. I went from playing for fun to working so hard that I felt I could just lie down, roll over and maybe even die. In rec, you did not break a sweat, you were not there to play hard or to be better than others, you were there to have fun. But comp/ high school soccer was a hard working team that gave their all, conditioned to be faster and stronger and to win together. i've never been in such a great soccer group in my life. Recreation and competition soccer are two way different things but are both really fun.

Dogs and cats have become a staple in America households all over the country. Although the two have their differences, they are more alike than most might think.
They both are extremely lovable. Even if you aren't a cat person, a cat that will cuddle up next to you is sure to melt your heart. They both can be either indoor or outdoor animals. Different breeds can live entirely outdoors or entirely inside. Cats and dogs are also very helpful in keeping out small animals from your house. In line with that, they have a history of carnivorous ancestors, and so they both have some of that in them.
Even with these similarities, most people will point out their differences. These include things like dogs loving exercise, and cats staying indoors. Cats are also notoriously less friendly then dogs. Not to mention that dogs are very easy to train, but cats, not so much.
These two animals may have their similarities and differences, but overall they are great to keep in a house, and easy for anyone to fall in love with.

A lot of people say that tennis is not nearly as hard of a sport as football. They say that in tennis, all you do is stand in the same spot on a small court and awing your arms. They say that tennis requires no training, effort or physical endurance. Some people will even go as far and say that tennis isn't even a sport, but they couldn't be more wrong. In tennis you have to be in the best shape possible. IT requires hard training and practice. I would like to see a 250 pound football player, who says he is an incredible athlete, run around on a tennis court in the middle of summer under the hot sun. Good thing that football doesn't require hand eye coordination, or all of these uncoordinated out of shape Americans wouldn't have a sport to play. So, next time you hear someone say that football is more of a sport than tennis, think about the facts as an intelligent person, not as a football fan.

Often times I have many different arguments based off of which sport is better, soccer or volleyball. Now my objective is not to say that volleyball is stupid or anything like that. Actually I even like it but it really has no comparisson with soccer. Soccer is by far the greatest sport. Some I talk to don't think soccer is even a sport which is outrageous because it is as difficult or more both mentally and physically. The people I've spoken to say it is an easy sport and could be played by anyone. Wrong. I would personally really like to see a volleyball player or even a football player go out and run a double six pack or the gotlet. Then they can tell me soccer is easy and can be played by anyone. Not. only in soccer you half to be fit but also. It is one of the most rough sports. Contact is what soccer is and if your not strong enough, oh boy. Infact the new statistics are saying lacrosse and soccer has had more concussions these past years than football. Obviously it Is your opinion of which one you like more but no one can say soccer is not "easy" because you have no idea.

A waffle cannot even compare to a scrumptious pancake. Although pancakes and waffles have the same use: a breakfast delicacy, there are more differences than you can imagine. While the waffle may be expertly shaped to provide the appropriate amount of syrup per bite, the pancake's classic stack allows for a mollasses avalanche with a snowy peak of butter. The waffle has also compromised taste for speed with its toasted Eggo. The Eggo does not even deserve to be called a waffle. Whereas nothing beats the fresh, never-frozen pancake. Without the pancake, IHOP wounld not even exist. IHOW may be a restaurant, but that doesn't quite slip off the tongue like IHOP. IHOW really sounds like a new Apple product. There are just too many reasons to choose the pancake so, for goodness's sake, le'go the Eggo.

Going in to my first year of high school I heard football was the most brutal and tiring sport. That we would run until we dropped and could not run any more. After todays first day of basketball tryouts i would beg to differ. For basketball its constant movement up and down the court and how you get prepared for that is running non stop in practices. You run so hard in basketball that your lungs burn and eventually if you run your hardest you will taste blood in your throat. Football may have more contact but in Basketball it is plenty physical and takes endurance, strength, and the right mind set to play.

Mean and Nice People
We all have a choice to be mean or nice to other people. Bullying other is mean and instead of that why don't the mean person be nice by offering to give love and friendship. That is being nice. If you decides to retaliate by doing evil then you're being mean. If a person does something really nice then pass on to other people around you to and maybe it will come back to you.

Change is happening every day in some way or another. Technology is going to take over the world. We see change in our everyday lives but we may not just see it. It can be how a person changes attitude or even technology uses. What is the world going to look like in the future of technology? Many of us know that, for the freshman, our schooling techniques and learning will be changed. We will more than likely get rid of most textbooks and switch to tablets or gadgets. We won't have to carry around those heavy backpacks that hurt our backs, instead we will just switch to technology. Some people may not get used to this change for a while but a lot will because some people are just using technology almost every minute in their life. That is, phones, laptops/computers, tablets, video games, etc. This means that we have increased technology use by a ton and it will just someday be a key source in the way of living and in a sense....."take over the world".
