Lord of the Flies Freshmen Honors Prompt #1

Lord of the Flies Freshmen Honors Prompt #1

I have decided to focus on a different idea than what we discussed this morning. Please log in and respond as a comment to the following prompt in a couple of paragraphs, and before answering, read the responses that others have left. Respond to others' ideas in your own response. Prompt: If you were stranded on an island, what would you do to ensure your survival and bring about your rescue?

If I were stranded on an island my first concern would be to find water. I would also look for food and some possible shelter. Another technique I might try to insure my surviaval is to make maps of where things are on the island. I would set markings around places so I would know where I was. Once I found water, food and shelter I would begin to think of my rescue. Id probably try to start a big fire. I would collect lots of wood and try to make a bon fire. Knowing me though there is probably no way Id be able to start one. I could also try building my own boat and sailing away. Unfortunatly it would probably sink. In the end I think my only hope would be to adjust to living on the island and hoping some people may find me.

If stranded on a deserted island, I would also build a fire. I would hope that the plumes of smoke would be enough to get the attention of ships and save me. I would build my bonfire on the highest point of the island so that it could be easily seen from the sea.
I would try to find some source of fresh water right away. If I couldn't find any, then I would boil sea water over my fire to get the salt out of it. Food would also be a top priority, and I might try to make traps of some kind so that I could catch wild animals to eat.
I would sleep by my fire to make sure it didn't go out, and to keep dangerous animals away, as well as to keep warm.
I thought Maclaine's comment about making a boat was interesting, because I didn't even think about that as a possibility for escape. I would definitely not be able to make a boat either, though, so I wouldn't even try.

If i were stranded on an island i would immediately try to find any other survivors in less i was alone. Then i'd try to find a fresh water source and look for wildlife or fruit i could utilize as food. Following finding a food and water source i'd try to build some type of shelter and also think of ways that could increase my chance of rescue. I'd try to find any open space on the island that i could have some type of attention getting tool on whether it was a large fire or some type of S.O.S. After i had a steady source of water, food, and a set up shelter i would start to think about how long i was gonna be there. If i was there for an extended period of time I would start to think of ways to get off the island.

If I were stranded on an island, the first thing I would do would be to make a working shelter. Then, I would look for something edible, while gathering wood. After bringing the wood back to my shelter area, I would set out to find water. Once I have all the essentials, I would begin to think about ways to get noticed or get off by myself.

Like Olivia and Maclaine, I probably wouldn't be able to build a boat, or anything for that matter. I would mostly focus on getting noticed. My best bet would be, like Douglas, to engrave a big word like "HELP", or "S.O.S" a big area of sand.

Maclaine, Olivia, and Douglas are going to be living in paradise on their islands (ps you stole all my ideas). Hopefully, I am stranded on an island with one of you since the three of you seem to know what your doing. Unfortunately if I wasn't, it would be bad, since I freak out in scary and uncertain situations. Knowing me, I would run around in circles waving my hands calling for help for 20 minutes, or something of the sort. After that phase, I would immediately begin looking for food, water, and shelter. I would scavage the island for edible wild berries and leaves, and look for a fresh water stream. If I can't find food and water, I'm screwed, so hopefully there is water and food on the island. I would settle on high territory (in a tree or on a mountain) since animals will leave you alone and it is easy to lookout at sea and it makes you a target for rescuers. I would definately do this before nightfall since you never know what kind of beast-things are lurking on the island. Once I found shelter I would collect wood and light a fire for warmth and in hopes of getting another boat's attention. I would also begin making weapons and traps to catch dinner. Yum, wild rabbit...? I would do exactly what Kino did in The Pearl, since he seemed to do great on his island.
In order to get other boat's attention I would try many things. The fire is a big one since whenever you see fire you know there are habitants over there since fires normally don't start by themselves. I would also write SOS in the sand and decorate it with vegetation from the island. This could attract helicopters and such. The boat idea was great, and hey you never know I might be able to build one. But then again I might get so frustrated with it I would destroy some things and that would be bad, so maybe no on the boat. After this my only hope is to sit and wait for help to arrive. I'm hoping someone will come rescue me:).

I once read that the three things that we need most for survival is food, water and shelter. My first thought would be to find these things. Once I found these things, I would try to make a fire. I would hope that it would do three things: attract ships, boil water so it would be good to drink, and cook any food I needed cooked. Then I would prepare for however long that I would be there. I disagree with Olivia and Maclaine about building a boat, because it would be impossible without the right tools that I probably would not have. I would focus on keeping the fire going and having logs next to it all the time. I would just have to hope that somebody would eventually find me.

If I was stranded on an Island I would first find a source of fresh clean water. Once I find that I would build a shelter near the water source. Assuming it is a tropical island, I make sure my shelter, especially where I sleep, is off the ground because of poisonous animals that wander along the ground. The next thing I need to do is find food sources. I would try to find any fruit bearing trees and create traps to capture wild animals. I would also make a fishing pole since fish would be another easy food source to obtain.
Once I have all those necessities, I would start planning my rescue. I would make a huge bon fire in hopes any ship or air craft may see the smoke or light. Since that strategy would be most effective at night, I would also create a huge SOS sign on the coast. I would either carve it into the sand or use tree branches, huge rocks, or any other large objects to spell it out.
If I knew what island I was on and how close it was to the mainland, I may build a boat. If I have no idea where I was I will not build a boat because being lost at sea is more a ticket to death than being stranded on an island. You would not have any sources of fresh water unless you are lucky and it rains. Food would also be hard to obtain when you are in the middle of an ocean. It would be much safer to stay on the island and hope someone will find you than be stranded in the ocean. If I was close to the mainland, I would consider making a boat, but I think it would sink because I do not know how to make a one.

If I was stranded on an island, I would first scout the island. This way I would have an idea of the island geographically and of the animals that roam the island. Then, I would create a temporary shelter to hold me over for that night. While creating this shelter I would keep in mind ways to escape in case I needed to run away from anything that night.

The next day I would search for a stream or any source of water I could find. Then I would search for fruit to eat. This way I would waste less energy, and it would take less time to get. I would then make some weapons; this way I could defend myself.

Lastly, I would create something huge on the island. That way it could be seen from long distances. I would create a fire. A fire that was big enough to consume half of the island. Then I would be found.

If I was stranded on an island the first thing that I would do is build some kind of shelter to prepare for what could happen. Next I would look for fresh water and hunt animals to eat. I would start a fire to cook my food and stay warm during cold weather.
If I was stranded on an island I would do anything to call the attention of those who passed by, such as helicopters, in hope that they would see me and rescue me. I would try to get their attention by starting large fires and writing an SOS. If nothing seemed to work I would have to come to the conclusion that I may never get out of the island and I would learn to adapt to the island and to live in isolation.

If i was stranded of a deserted island,i would take a deep breath, look around, and think at least i'm dying in paradise. I would probably try to gather some wood to make a fire, but then i would remember that i don't know how to make fire. I would be bummed at first, but then i would go swimming in the beautiful ocean and get over it. At first i would be scared of sharks, but hey, getting eaten by sharks isn't much worse than starving to death. That would make me sad, but then i would remember the whole beautiful ocean thing and it would help. Maybe during my dip, i notice some big fish or some sea life that i can eat. I probably wouldnt expect to be able to live off of this, but maybe i can make one last great feast out of it. I catch the fish, but then remember my fire dilemma. Well how hard could making fire be? if the cave men could do it i can do it. I get to work making fire and it finally works. I cook my feast and eat to my heart's delight. By this time it's probably getting late. I'm going to be alive at least till tomorrow, so i might as well make a little fort with my left over fire wood. Maybe this whole island thing won't be too bad

On a deserted sland my first action would be to find or make a shelter. I would probably do this first because I would be a way for me to feel safe. Then I would figure out where there is clean/drinkable water. That would also insure safety. I would need to figure out a way to get food, if that means fishing or hunting. I could probably even find some berries or some sort of dry food. I would want people to be able to find me so in the evening I would collect firewood and start trying to build a fire, this would help helicopters/ships see where I am. I would figure out how to stay alm on the island and maybe even have some fun swimming.

If I were on a deserted island, my primary focus would be water and shelter. Then I would worry about food. The body can go awhile without food, but it NEEDS water and shelter. I would also see if there was any wildlife.
Depending on wood supply, I might light a bonfire to signal ships and planes, or I could write SOS on the beach. I would probably have to find some berries or fruit to eat, but eventually I would have to make makeshift weapons, both to defend myself and to hunt.
My shelter would probably be somewhere high, that way I could see if any unwanted guests come try to eat me.

If it were me stranded on an island id focus on getting water and food for my first concern. My second concern would be shelter. Id also create some sort of signal fire to alert passing ships im here and get some material that burns with dark smoke. I would also try to make a raft as a fail safe just in case the ship doesnt come.

If I was stranded on an island I would bring a backpack with me. It would contain matches, dehydrated food, a blanket, a canister, a knife, and a pen and paper. I would start looking for water immediately. As I explored the island I would draw out a map of it. If I encountered natives I would befriend them. When night came I would build myself a shelter or sleep under a bush.

After I had settled into the island life I would begin planning my rescue. I would build large cone shaped wood figures. I would then proceed to light them on fire when I saw an aircraft or boat. As the wood burned it would create smoke and light, thus giving me a better chance of being rescued. If that failed I would just sit on the island and wait to die.
