One of my favorite non-fiction texts is a documentary called "Kickin' It." The documentary follows the lives of eight homeless soccer players who are drafted to play for the national homeless indoor soccer league in their country. Each country goes to South Africa to play for the homeless world cup. These people were recovering drug addicts and criminals, but all these homeless people were brought together by soccer. It was a sad yet very enjoyable documentary. ~Gabriel Allam. compelling non fiction. per. 2

It contains very fascinating experiments with results that help to show how the human mind works. -Hannah Samowitz period 6
My favorite non-fiction book is Born to Run by Christopher McDougall. Especially as a runnner myself, this book contains lots of useful and inspiring information about the crazy world or runners and super athletes. From the deserts of Tarahumara land to the gyms at Brown, McDougall takes you into the depths of the history and knowledge behind running and some of the most amazing runners the world has ever seen. By the end though, you find that the book had been somewhat of a very long and drawn out persuasive essay on why we should all run barefoot but extremely well written and persuasive it is. You finish it feeling like you could run 50 miles in a pinch. So inspiring and fun to read!
The most fascinating non-fiction text that ive read is a book called "Cry of the Kalahari." Its about two people who flew to Africa and bought a Range Rover and drove deep into an undisturbed part of the Kalahari Desert to study animals that have never seen humans. They lived there for seven years and faced many perils while there. -Sean Lambourne Period 1
My favorite non-fiction text is the book "Blind Descent" by Bill Stone. It is a first person account of Bill Stone and his various team as the race to find the deepest place on the earth. This book takes the reader through some of the world's largest caves including Krubera, and Huautla. -Pat Neville, period 6
Earlier this year I watched a documentary called "Food Inc.". It is by far one of my favorite documentaries I have ever seen. It shows how food compaies really treat and raise the animals they use for the food. It also shows good ways for people to eat healthier and eat non-processed foods. Many scenes in the documentary can be disturbing and very gross but it is still a very good documentary to watch.
One of my favorite non-fiction texts would be "Into the Wild". It is a very straight forward text with a lot of description and repetition.I like how the author is driven to find clues about a young mans life, one that he didn't know. The writing style is very easy to read, yet not too childish. The content is very adult and mature. -Monica period 6
One of my favorite non-fiction works is a book and film called "127 Hours." This film and novel is written by the first person narrative of Arron Ralston. When Ralston is trapped by a boulder in a canyon he recalls many relationships and events that have occured throughout his life. While Ralston's arm is pinned by a boulder, he faces decisions that really challenge the human mind, body, and soul. This film is a very graphic and interesting non-fiction work. -Philip Start, period 6
One of my favorite non-fiction texts that I have read was a book called, "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly." This book is about a man who suffered a stroke at the age of 43 that did such damage that left him with the condition called locked in syndrome. This left him only able to use his eyes, so this meant using his eyes only to communicate. This book taught me to not take life for granted, and to always live life to the very fullest.
"Dogtown And Z-Boys" is my favorite non-fiction text. This documentary is about childhood friends that came together and innovated skateboarding into what it is now. The documentary starts with them as young kids and finishes off with what they have become today. -Sam Swillinger Period 6
My favorite non-fiction text happens to be one of our summer reading books for sophomores this year. First They Killed My Father by Loung Ung is a book about a 5 year old girl who is sent to live in horrible conditions almost starving to death during the time when Khmer Rouge tried to take over Cambodia. It follows her for four years as she escapes being raped, starving to death, and how she learns to cope with the loss of her family members. It was sad but it opened my eyes to the horrors that can happen in our world. Rachel Struhs period 6
The best non-fiction book that I have ever read is Night by Elie Wiesel. It is the story of Elie's travel through multiple concentration camps during the Holocaust. Being Jewish, the extreme detail that was put into this book really moved me. I felt the emotions and the pain that Elie felt, just to a lesser degree. It really helped me understand just how horrifying the Holocaust really was. -Sam Stevenson period 2
My favorite non-fiction piece is the documentary "March of the Penguins". This documentary is about the annual journey emperor penguins make to their breeding grounds in Antarctica, their courtship, and the journeys to and from the sea made by the parents to keep their young alive. It depicts the trails and hardships these penguins must face in order to reproduce and create the next generation Patrick Sullivan Period 2
One of my favorite non-fiction books is one that I read last year called The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. Never having food or money, Walls and her family are always moving and running away from debts. Though the family is dysfunctional and constantly on the verge of collapsing, everybody press on despite all odds. The memoir depicts everything in such a surreal way that one doesn't even believe that it is possible to live the way the author did and then somehow grow up to be a well known author and journalist. It proves that one can start at literally nothing, but by working hard, you can achieve really anything.
"First They Killed My Father" by Loung Ung is one of my favorite non fiction books. It follows Loung as she and her family try to survive under the Khmer Rouge. She talks about how many nights her and her family went without food and the people around her were losing their family members and sick with many diseases. -Cassadey period 2
One of the most interesting documentaries I've seen was called Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. It was a story about an obese man loading up on steroids and suffering from a autoimmune disease. When he came to the point to where he almost died, he started to rethink his life. Instead of eating nothing but junk food, he started to juice. He vowed only to drink fruit and vegetable juice. It was to achieve a better lifestyle and to stop taking pills. It was amazing how far this man went without eating anything and only drinking healthy juice. It was so inspiring, my parents decided we needed to purchase a juicer! -Quiana Mondragon p. 2
My favorite non-fiction text I have read is called "Tuesdays with Morrie." This is a story told from the Author, Mitch Albom, about his professor, Morrie, and his battle with ALS. I love the way this book is divided into different chapters or "Tuesdays" he spent visiting Morrie and what life topic they discuss that day. I believe this book is filled with wisdom about life, love, and ways to achieve your own personal happiness. I have re-read this book many times, and find myself discovering new themes and lessons each time. -Kylie Petron

I believe that teenagers should find this drive to do the things they love. -Gabi Dodson compelling non fiction, period 6

One of my favorite non-fiction texts is a documentary by espn called "Roll Tide, War Eagle". It is about the intense rivalry between the University of Alabama and Auburn University football teams. To be honest I only watched it because Cam Newton is in it but it was actually really interesting to see how passionate and sometimes frightening football fans can get. I thought the Utah BYU rivalry was intense but it is nothing compared to this. Then a crazy guy poisoned Auburn's trees and everyone cried. However, in the end there was a tornado that killed over 200 people Tuscaloosa and everyone, even Auburn fans, came to help and the rivalry was put on hold for only a couple of days. Kaley Banyai P.6
My all time favorite non-fiction texts is an autobiography called "Dancing on my Grave" by one of the worlds most famous ballerinas Gelsey Kirkland. The book is the tragic story of Gelsey's life starting from when she was a little girl. It talks about her dreams of becoming a ballerina from a small age and all the people who told her she could never be one. Gelsey lived a tragic life and the book really got to me especially being a dancer, her and I have been through some of the terrible struggles with body image etc. In the book there is also a section in her life where the dancing just makes her crazy, a true black swan story. But eventually she comes out of it, and becomes who I believe is the greatest ballerina of all time. It is truly an unbelievable, brutal and honest book. -Megan O'Brien Period 2

I like this, because I find Chris to be a very relatable. Plus, one can't deny that his story is truly remarkable. I enjoyed every page of this book.
My favorite non-fiction text is probably "Hells Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga" by Hunter S. Thompson. Thompson is one of my favorite writers and it is very interesting to hear him talk about living and partying with a subculture as weird and revolting as the motorcycle gang. -Jack Keller Period 2
My favorite non-fiction text is the book "Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer. The most interesting text that I have read would probably be “Blink” by Malcolm Gladwell. It is a very good read. You learn a lot about rapid cognition, and how the we understand the world around us. It tells us how the human mind works when coming to decision making. This book mainly focuses on how we think about things without actually thinking. One interesting study was one with a psychologist predicting if a marriage will last or not just by observing a couple. -Priscilla Peralta Compelling non fiction per. 2
I believe my favorite nonfiction book I've read was my summer reading of "Into The Wild." I really enjoyed this book because it really captured what life would be like to run away. Reading this book, I could really relate. There have been times when I wish I could just disappear and start over on my own without any responsibilities. That seems a bit irrational, but to me that would be interesting. Relating to this book came easily to me and I really found this book to open my eyes about the reality of decision making. This book helped me realize that there is more than what is in our minds.
"First the Killed my Father" was a really good autobiography/documentary novel. In the first part of the book I actually grew hungry when she described the food of the restaurants in Phnom Penh. But when the Khmer Rouge soldiers came and vacated the city; it was hard to believe that people crying and panicked was her last vision of her home. Her time in the camps weren't the best of her life; first she lost her older sister, then her father, then her mother and little sister, Geak. It's despicable to see corruption and rape over the story. Loung Ung's father was a brave man to keep his family alive while he could. I give recommendation of this book to others!
I think that my favorite non-fiction book was "Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom. I had to read this book over the summer for some English classes I had been taking, but I actually enjoyed it. It's a story about a man named Mitch Albom who had another chance to rediscover his old college professor, Morrie, in the last months of the older man's life. Knowing he was dying, Mitch visited with Morrie in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rediscovered relationship turned into one final "class": lessons in how to live.
